First introduced under the Tokugawa Shogunate, a standard koban was valued at 1 ryō (a monetary unit roughly tied to the value of a specific amount of rice). Because of their gold content, kobans were heavily used in trade, merchant dealings, and as rewards for samurai and high-ranking officials. Over time, as economic crises and Shogunate policies changed, the gold purity of the koban decreased.

Along this pen, delicate floral elements and graceful birds add movement and visual depth, balancing the richness of the gold-themed design. A vibrant blue section adorned with ornate blossoms introduces a refreshing burst of color that complements the warm metallic tones. Together, these carefully arranged details create a fountain pen that feels both regal and artistically expressive, making it a captivating centerpiece in any collection.

About Danitrio Sho-Hakkaku Fountain Pen Series:

The Sho-Hakkaku is a Danitrio series pen that is octagonal-shaped. Danitrio wanted to create a shorter version of the Hakkaku. Hakkaku means "discovery" in Japanese.

Nib Details:

This pen is furnished with an 18k Gold, two-toned #6 nib. What has been described by many Danitrio collectors as the fireball nib is an image of “Kaen-Kohai” which is a flame-shaped halo of “Fudo Myoo” (Acala, the God of Fire).
