You may be familiar with the image on the cap of this pen: it’s a rendering of ‘The Great Wave off Kanagawa’ (also known as Kanagawa oki nami ura), often considered the most recognizable work of Japanese art in the world. You can see Mount Fuji in the distance as the great waves overtake a small boat.
Artwork on the barrel is inspired by the same artist, Hokusai, from his work, “Kajikazawa in Kai Province.” Both images are part of the famous series, “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji.”
The “Kajikazawa in Kai Province” design is inspired by Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji No. 15 (c. 1830–32), depicting a fisherman and his young son casting a net along the turbulent Fuji River, with Mount Fuji rising calmly in the distance. The dynamic composition—defined by strong diagonal lines and triangular forms—contrasts human perseverance against the raw power of nature. Renowned for its early and dramatic use of Prussian Blue, the scene captures both the rugged spirit of river fishermen and the timeless, immovable presence of Fuji, balancing motion and stillness in a single evocative image.
This pen is a continuation of the artistry and brilliance of Hokusai, who is considered one of the greatest artists in Japanese history.

About the Artisan:
This pen was handpainted by Minoru Oohata (Rakkan). Born in 1951. He trained as an apprentice under Maki-E artisan Kashigi Hozo and learned modern art from Kakinoki Akira. He is recognized by the Japanese Government as a Dento Kogei-shi, which an honorary title meaning "master of traditional crafts" and is given only to a select few artisans who have a significant contribution to their craft. He's passionate about acquiring more knowledge in brush and Maki-E techniques. His works are promoted at exhibitions including Nihon Bijutsuin.
