Cats & Fishes is a delightful homage to that tension between animals, the predatory cat and the swimming fish. The artwork is inspired by the original ukiyo-e (Japanese woodblock painting) by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, a ukiyo-e master during the Edo period. The original artwork was called "Cat and Koi".
The cap features an orange cat, claws extended, licking at the water. On the barrel, fish swim about, hoping to escape the notice of the cat. A pen that tells a story, Cats & Fishes is a testament to the creativity of urushi artisans and the harmony of nature.
This pen has a variant with similar maki-e artwork. Version 1 of this pen can be found on this page.
