Chinkin is a technique requiring immense dexterity and skill in which the artistan chisels out a pattern on a lacquered surface and then will embed the grooves with gold leaf (gold hammered into thin sheet) and gold powder. The gold is sealed in by applying an exterior layer of urushi.
This pen features two hawks engraved with chinkin technique. The hawk in Japan symbolizes strength, auspiciousness, and power.

In sumo wrestling, the "Yokozuna" is the highest rank a sumo wrestler can achieve. The term means horizontal rope which is derived from the rope that is worn around the Yokozuna's waist.

About the Artisan:
This pen was handpainted by Katsuhiro Nishi (Katsuhiro). Born in 1955. He is well recognized by the Japanese government for his mastery in chinkin art. He has been performing chinking for multiple decades and his works can be found in exhibitions in Japan.
